Frequently Asked Questions

Therapy-Related

  • The first step in getting therapy is to schedule yourself for a 20 minute phone call. That phone call is a chance to describe what you want to work on in therapy, to ask any questions you have, and to get an initial sense of what working with your therapist would be like. If you do decide to work together, the next step is to book a time for your first therapy session. All the paperwork you need to fill out ahead of time will be sent to you via a secure client portal. At your first session, which lasts the standard one hour, you’ll share more about where you come from and where you want to go. You and your therapist will collaborate on a plan to use your therapy time to get you there.

  • Investing in your mental health is a significant decision and placing your trust in a therapist takes courage. There are many different reasons why people make this investment. Some choose therapy because they are looking for symptom relief or for their suffering to lessen. Others are searching for insight and better understanding of the patterns of their life and where those patterns started.

Many people start therapy at a crisis moment: right when they are feeling overwhelmed and like they are unraveling, when they are going through a major change, or when something is blocking them from the life they want. We are ready to work with you on each of your concerns. Things to consider when making this decision for yourself: Can you make the commitment to put what we work on in therapy into practice in your life? Are you ready to find a way out of suffering? And perhaps most importantly, are you open to building a real relationship with someone dedicated to holding your concerns in a non judgmental space?

  • Therapy is most effective when you have time to build a real relationship with your therapist. You decide how long you want to be in therapy. Your therapist will collaborate with you on a treatment plan based on what you want to work on.

They will check in with you regularly on what progress you are making and what work remains to be done. Typically, 12 sessions is considered a brief intervention, while longer term work lasts 24 sessions and beyond. Meeting routinely and consistently will aid your progress.

  • Full Focus Therapy is designed by LGBTQ+ people and dedicated to serving LGBTQ+ people. LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer. The + stands for people who exist in the queer community outside of these specific labels, or who reject the idea of labels in the first place. This includes people who are questioning if and where they belong under this umbrella.

We take the stance of welcoming, affirming, and including people from across all genders and sexualities. We support that value via advanced training and clinical experience in working with these communities.

  • You decide what to prioritize in your therapy sessions and we can make room for any topic. Exploring your queer identity may or may not take top priority. Perhaps that is just one part of who you are and you would like to prioritize other goals. Either way, together you and your therapist will agree on what goals to focus on at the start of your relationship.

Payments

  • Full Focus Therapy accepts Cigna and Aetna insurance, in both New York and Illinois. Other insurance companies may offer partial or full reimbursement for session fees for out-of-network providers.

To get information regarding your specific insurance and how they handle out-of-network services, contact your insurance provider directly. If we are not in your network, we can provide you with the paperwork for you to submit to your insurance provider.

  • The fee for a 60 minute session is $300. In order to help make therapy more financially accessible to all, we offer several spots to see clients on a sliding scale fee. To find out if you qualify for the sliding scale fee, ask during your initial consultation call.

  • To keep your payments secure, we are not allowed to accept payments through online platforms such as Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal. We keep a credit card on file through a secure online platform and charge at the end of each session or missed session.

  • We use TherapyAppointment, a HIPAA compliant platform, to keep all client information secure.

General

  • Yes, you are welcome also. We center the LGBTQ+ community in the work that we do. We also believe that working from an affirmative, queer lens can benefit anyone.

  • Progress in therapy depends on your willingness to practice what we work on in session, between sessions. The more you participate, the more you will get out of it.

  • All therapy services are conducted online.

  • Although our services are provided online, it is still a small world. If you happen to see your therapist in person, you are welcome to wave hello or say hi.

Please know that therapists are legally bound by confidentiality, which means that we have to keep our clients’ information private. This includes even the fact that they are our clients. If you run into your therapist in person outside of therapy, they will likely not approach you or say hello unless you initiate that contact.
